DIY: Let’s Make Bath Bombs! (Trust Me, They’re Easy)

bath bombsMy latest obsession is making bath bombs. It’s one of those things I saw often on Pinterest, especially when searching “homemade gifts” and the like. I made a couple of batches this weekend and I kid you not — my son needed a gift for a young lady for her birthday and I just HAPPENED to have a couple of bath bombs handy. I wrapped them up in a cute little square box (I love squares) and some cute ribbon and the gift was a huge hit.

Not two hours later my brother was over to help me with the planked wall background and he was mentioning he needed a graduation gift for a friend’s wife. Yes, enter bath bombs. My point is these are fantastic gifts to keep on hand that are very much appreciated, especially for those folks on the go and in need of some slowing down “me time”. They’re relatively easy and there are so many options for colors and scents. I had so much fun with this project. I found it very relaxing as well as fun and choosing my scents and colors was probably my favorite part. I’m already looking forward to Christmas so I can make these babies in bulk.

Without further ado, here’s the basic recipe:

DIY Bath Bombs
This recipe makes 5 of the 2.5″ diameter bombs

You’ll Need:
1 cup baking soda
1/2 cup cornstarch
1/2 cup Epsom salt
1/2 cup citric acid
6 tsp coconut oil (melted)
4 tsp water
a total of 2 tsp essential oils (you may want to make several scents and colors, so use your judgment)
few drops food coloring or washable liquid watercolors (I used these — LOVE them, use them for many projects!)
silicon molds of your choosing or bath bomb molds (I prefer the actual bath bomb molds)

Mix all dry ingredients in a bowl, slowly add wet ingredients, mixing with a whisk. If you are doing different scents, this is where you will split your mixture before you add scent and color. When thoroughly mixed and wet enough to stick together (so it will hold it’s shape in the mold, you may need to add a teeny bit more water) spoon firmly into molds until they’re filled. If using the bath bomb molds, over fill the molds slightly and firmly place two halves together. Make sure to remove any extra mixture from the center where it might squish out. Let the mixture set for ten minutes, flipping and tapping on the top of the bath bomb mold halfway through to get everything to settle together. I discovered this helped a lot when trying to pop the bomb out of the mold. Once removed, allow the the bath bombs to dry for 24 hours.

Aside from actually using them (which they do rock), they look great in a bowl by the tub. If they’re a gift, you can place them in a clear party favor bag with a cute ribbon or wrap in tissue paper and put in a fun little box all tied up with ribbon. They make a great presentation and are excellent for teacher gifts, birthday for friends, or just for fun. I made some for a little friend of mine who is 6-years-old. I scented them with bubblegum extract, made them pink, and added hot pink glitter. What 6-year-old wouldn’t love that?

If you just aren’t in the mood to make your own, (I get it, sometimes you’re just not feeling it) here are a few options for you to purchase them, ready to fizz. These are affiliate links which, as you know, if you place an order helps me keep the lights on.
