Beach Decor: Have the Look After Vacation

Getting the beach vibe at home can be done, we’re showing you some of our favorite beach decor.

We are back from our trip to Destin, Florida but I think I left a piece of my heart. As we were driving away from the beach on our last night there, I told Travis that God must have dropped me in land-locked Kentucky so I’d have to work really hard to one day have my little house on the coast. If I started off there, I’d work just enough to buy coffee, paint and sunblock then spend my days riding around on a beach cruiser.

I have so many things I want to tell you about our trip, including some things I learned about road-tripping and packing up two kids for the beach, but today I thought I’d share some of the beautiful homes and beach decor I spotted. If you’re ever in Destin, you have to go to Retail Therapy! There are two locations; do yourself a favor and go to both. The shops are made up of vendor booths and every one is prettier than the last.

Untitled designI bought a driftwood garland, some sea glass for a project and a beautiful stained glass star but I wanted all of the things, especially the beautiful wall art and this rustic mermaid statue that was tucked away  in a corner. Yes, I need that mermaid.

Most days, the kids would fall asleep on the drive from the beach to the house so we’d drive around and do some daydreaming. I loved how there were a variety of styles from vibrant houses with whimsical details, to California-style beach houses with sleek lines and modern details and my favorite, the all-American ones with shutters, light blue ceilings and extra wide porch swings. It was all eye candy and I couldn’t get enough.

Being the magpie that I am, I came home with driftwood, sand and little pieces of Destin that I’ll use to feather my nest until I make it that far South for good. In the last year, I’ve given myself the freedom to change up the decor in our home for things that I really love─ things that make me feel peaceful. It’s funny how little by little, each room has taken on some character of the coast either in color─lots of sea glass hues, cloud white, pebble gray and galvanized silver─or contrasting decorative touches like aqua glass jars next to driftwood. It makes sense now that I think about it that being someone who is so drawn by the ocean, my home would reflect that with my beach decor. Maybe I’m less magpie and more loggerhead turtle, being pulled to sea?

How do you decorate with the treasures you find while traveling? Do you have any beach decor in your home?

P.S. I haven’t yet unpacked my bags but the driftwood garland from Retail Therapy already found a home on the dining room chandelier that I recently chalk painted and I’ve been slowly restyling the dining room shelves. Here’s a peek!
